What is a Skin Biopsy?

Skin Biopsy Manila

A Skin Biopsy procedure is a non-invasive medical procedure where a small sample of your skin is taken and analyzed under a microscope. This is to determine what’s going on in the skin. This helps identify the presence of different skin conditions, such as skin cancer, rashes, infections, and such.

Different Kinds of Skin Biopsies

There are 4 ways to perform a Skin Biopsy:

Punch Biopsy

This is the most common technique for a skin biopsy. A small, circular tool is used to get a sample of your skin tissue the size of a pencil eraser. This means it will sample deeper layers of your skin, from the epidermis, to the dermis, & some fat. Sizes may vary depending on the body site, so you shouldn’t worry about getting a big scar.

Shave Biopsy

This is where a thin blade or scalpel is used to scrape the underside of the skin lesion to be analyzed. This includes the epidermis & the top layers of the dermis. This is a superficial biopsy & has the least chance of getting a scar.

Incisional Biopsy

This involves using a scalpel to surgically remove part of a tumor for analysis.

Excisional Biopsy

This involves using a scalpel to surgically remove the entire tumor & some healthy tissue surrounding it for analysis.
