Ingrown toenail removal procedure

An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of the nail grows into the skin rather than outward, producing pain, irritation, and sometimes infection. This procedure starts with applying local anesthesia to the affected toe. A special tool will be used to lift the nail & cut away the part that’s growing into the skin. Depending on the severity, a part or the whole nail will be removed. After the procedure, the area will be cleaned & dressed with a bandage.

Destruction of nail matrix

The nail matrix is responsible for producing new nail cells for your finger or toe nails. After an ingrown toenail removal procedure, a piece of the nail matrix is destroyed to prevent recurrences. This will prevent having a malformed nail growing on the same side in the future.

Full nail plate removal (nail avulsion)

For really thick nails that can’t be easily clipped, patients may choose to have their whole nail plate removed. If they do not want a wide nail to grow back, they can also request for the destruction of the nail matrix, too.

Biopsy

If your nail looks abnormal (maybe dark spots/ lines/ etc.), you may need to get it checked, in case it could be a sign of a serious condition that might need treatment. A nail biopsy will be performed, where a tiny piece of your skin will be taken & examined under a microscope. This is to see if there are any signs of cancer or other diseases in it.
