What is a Skin Resurfacing Procedure?
A Skin Resurfacing Procedure is a minimally invasive treatment using ablative and/or non-ablative lasers with the aim to remove the outermost and/or deeper layers of skin.
These lasers work by emitting intense bursts of light to heat the skin’s surface, letting it vaporize and peel away. The underlying skin is stimulated to produce new collagen and elastin fibers, leading to improved skin texture and reduced fine lines and wrinkles.
Different Types of Resurfacing Lasers
Erbium: YAG 2940 nm Laser
Our clinic is equipped with an Erbium: YAG 2940 nm Laser. A skin resurfacing procedure using this laser is done to remove the outermost layers of skin. The damaged skin is removed, as new & more robust skin cell growth is produced, replacing the old, damaged cells. This leads to smoother & younger looking skin. What makes this laser special for skin resurfacing is that it spares the deeper layers, avoiding prolonged downtimes, leading to less discomfort & faster recovery.
CO2 10,600 nm Laser
Our clinic is also equipped with a CO2 10600 nm Laser. When this laser is emitted to the skin, it is absorbed by the water in the skin cells, leading to vaporization. As the damaged skin cells are being removed, collagen (which gives skin its strength and elasticity) production is stimulated at the same time. Given enough time, your skin will look tighter, smoother, & more youthful with newer collagen replacing the damaged skin cells. This laser is more effective for treating deeper wrinkles, scars, & sun damage because it can penetrate deeper into the skin (Do note: it can be more uncomfortable & need a longer downtime than other laser treatments).
Erbium: Glass 1540 nm Laser
The Erbium Glass Laser employs glass doped with erbium ions as its laser medium. This laser emits light at a wavelength of approximately 1,540 nanometers, which is considered safer for the eyes than other wavelengths.
The Er:Glass Laser is generally used for more extensive skin resurfacing procedures, targeting deeper layers of the skin. It can effectively address moderate to severe wrinkles, deeper scars, and sun-damaged skin.
Non-ablative skin rejuvenation uses a laser to improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and minor scars by creating heat in the skin without injuring the surface of the skin. The heat generated by the laser promotes collagen production. This procedure has no downtime, causes the least pain, & focuses on outermost layer of skin.
Collagen is a protein that our bodies naturally produce & found in our skin, bones, muscles, and tendons. Think of collagen as the scaffolding that holds up a building. Just like scaffolding is used to support a building during construction, collagen provides support and structure to our skin, bones, and other tissues. Over time, just as scaffolding can become weak or damaged, our bodies produce less collagen, causing our skin to become less firm and more prone to wrinkles and sagging.
